H&S Book Club | Black Buck

Black Buck is the debut novel from New Yorker Mateo Askaripour. It delves into the American Dream brought to modern times via what it means to be a black man in a white man’s world, spotting racism even when it’s subtle, and how to sell anyone on almost anything (including yourself). But as Darren surmises, our protagonist in Black Buck, “there’s nothing like a Black salesman on a mission.”

An unambitious twenty-two-year-old, Darren lives in a Bed-Stuy brownstone with his mother, who wants nothing more than to see him live up to his potential as the valedictorian of Bronx Science. But Darren is content working at Starbucks in the lobby of a Midtown office building, hanging out with his girlfriend, Soraya, and eating his mother’s home-cooked meals. All that changes when a chance encounter with Rhett Daniels, the silver-tongued CEO of Sumwun, NYC’s hottest tech startup, results in an exclusive invitation for Darren to join an elite sales team on the thirty-sixth floor.

After enduring a “hell week” of training, Darren, the only Black person in the company, reimagines himself as “Buck,” a ruthless salesman unrecognizable to his friends and family. But when things turn tragic at home and Buck feels he’s hit rock bottom, he begins to hatch a plan to help young people of color infiltrate America’s sales force, setting off a chain of events that forever changes the game.

Of course, you’ll have to read Black Buck to learn how it all plays out. We’ll leave you with a final thought from our CEO, Elizabeth Harrison. “Black Buck is an entertaining, accessible and thorough look at America’s race problem. It’s a necessary read for those living under the weight of oppressive systems as well as for those looking to better understand their complicity within them.”

An opportunity means change. An opportunity means action. But most of all, an opportunity means the chance of failure. And it’s the potential for failure, more than the failure itself, that stops so many people from beginning anything.
— Madison Cassidy's, Account Coordinator, favorite quote
It’s the duty of every man and woman who has achieved some success in life to pass it on, because when we’re gone, what matters most isn’t what we were able to attain but who we were able to help.
— Anina Bose's, Director & Joan Daly's, Digital Strategist favorite quote
‘Can’ nothing grow without fertile soil or the right hands for it. This right here,’ he said, touching a dusty finger to my temple, ‘is soil. Just like this garden. And only you can decide what grows and who you allow to get their hands in it. Understand?’

H&S Book Club | Leave The World Behind

Leave The World Behind is a magnetic novel about two families, strangers to each other, who are forced together on a long weekend gone terribly wrong.

Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple—and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? And are they safe from one other?

Suspenseful and provocative, Rumaan Alam’s third novel is keenly attuned to the complexities of parenthood, race, and class. Leave the World Behind explores how our closest bonds are reshaped—and unexpected new ones are forged—in moments of crisis.

Maybe better as a movie? ... Lucky for us it’s already in production!!!

Reading this while in a global pandemic was terrifying, but incredibly interesting. Almost hard to believe that this story was written pre COVID-19.

Agency Off Duty: H&S' Newest Moms Talk Work-Life Balance

We took a quick moment to sit down with two of H&S’ newest moms, Director Lauren Monroe and Vice President Erika Lam, to talk about work-life balance, COVID, and more!

Finding the Sweet Spot with Work-Life Balance as a New Mom

What did work-life balance mean before starting a family, and how has that changed over time?

Lauren: Before having Avery, achieving work-life balance was always a challenge, and sometimes still is, but having a baby forces me to stop work at a certain time every day. The one thing I’m still working towards is getting a good work-out routine! My goal is to be consistent with workouts by the end of the year, even if I’m only getting in a couple days a week!

Erika: In many ways, it was self-centered, but in the best way! I would explore the city with my husband, splurge on retail therapy, take a workout class. It was embracing everything the city could offer and letting that inspire me during my off-hours. Now with a five-month old, my perspective has obviously shifted and every spare moment I get – whether it’s before work, at lunch, or after work – it’s to soak up quality time with a baby that’s growing up way too fast!

COVID all hit us pretty hard, but especially parents. What has this experience been like for you?

Lauren: This has been the wildest year. Luckily Avery is a baby so when daycare shut down, she was easy to handle at home. I have to admit that it hasn’t all been bad, in fact, a lot of it has been great. I had just come back from maternity leave when COVID first hit and then everyone was working from home. Like many people, my husband and I were furloughed from work, but the upside was that I got a few more uninterrupted months at home with Avery! Luckily, the agency picked back up after a few months and H&S was able to bring me back (thank you Elizabeth Harrison!), which I was very happy about. We’ve made the best out of every curveball thrown at us this year!

Erika: I was in my third trimester when the COVID peak hit, so the best decision for my family was to relocate to Maryland, where cases were a little more controlled and we would have family nearby. The agency was fully supportive of my decision and working remotely ended up being a smooth transition. It was a hard decision, and very scary to navigate all these “firsts” during a global pandemic, but the support of my friends, family and work family made it much easier.

How has the agency and your clients supported you in this new role?

Erika: Everyone has been so supportive! As a new mom, everyone has been accommodated doctor’s appointments, going off-camera to pump, and even the occasional crying baby in the backdrop of a TEAMS meeting. I always knew H&S would be a welcoming place for parents, but even when we were all put to the test with COVID, I really saw that firsthand.

Lauren: H&S has been so supportive of me being a new parent. Having people check-in on you and show support is the best feeling. I’m so grateful for my H&S family ❤.

Any advice for first time parents getting ready to come back to work and looking for tips on how to balance work and family?

Lauren: I’d say be patient and flexible. Having a baby brings you unpredictable moments every day and just when you lock in a routine, your baby might experience another moment of growth and change things up. Be kind and honest with yourself about what you can do, what you want to do, and what you need to do. You’ll most likely really enjoy getting to go back to work, getting back some moments of life before the baby, and then you’ll also really look forward to family-time.

Erika: I have to say, the anticipation of going back to work was worse than actually coming back! After a couple weeks, I felt like I had a pretty good rhythm. Lauren’s right in that getting back to work brings back feelings of your “old self” and inspires a completely different side of you. Plus, it makes your off-hours and weekends all the more sweet.

Agency Off Duty: Madison's Top 3 Fall Book Picks

Madison Cassidy, Account Coordinator

Between working remotely on my laptop, watching the daily news on television, and doomscrolling on my phone, I’ve found myself needing to find an escape through literature more than ever. As the days start getting shorter and the chilly weather means spending more time inside, I usually turn toward more mysterious, spooky titles ahead of Halloween. Here are three of my recent favorites that are perfect for the season.

When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole

Cole uses modern-day Brooklyn as the backdrop for this new thriller about gentrification. When Sydney Green tries to preserve her changing neighborhood, she starts noticing that her neighbors are going missing. To share the neighborhood’s history, she conducts research for a walking tour but she and new neighbor Theo start to realize there’s something more sinister moving in… An important and timely read, When No One Is Watching is a Get Out-esque suspenseful tale.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Setterfield’s neo-Gothic novel is a book for book lovers. Popular but reclusive author Vida Winter chooses biographer Margaret Lea to document her life and finally the eponymous long-lost tale. As Margaret starts listening, she and Vida slowly uncover the older woman’s tragic past. This haunting story is for anyone wanting a slow-burn mystery.

Social Creature by Tara Isabella Burton

It’s been a couple years since the Summer of Scam but Social Creature is a fictionalized take on those addictive stories. Soon after meeting glamorous Lavinia, Louise leaves her unfulfilling tutoring gig to party, and eventually live, with the socialite. As the two indulge in a ritzy lifestyle against the backdrop of New York City, their friendship begins to spiral. Be warned: Burton’s Gossip Girl meets The Talented Mr. Ripley thriller will steal your free time away before you even notice.

H&S Book Club | A Place for Us

A Place for Us unfolds the lives of an Indian-American Muslim family, gathered together in their Californian hometown to celebrate the eldest daughter, Hadia's, wedding - a match of love rather than tradition. In a narrative that spans decades and sees family life through the eyes of each member, A Place For Us charts the crucial moments in the family's past, from the bonds that bring them together to the differences that pull them apart.  A deeply affecting and resonant story, A Place for Us is truly a book for our times: a moving portrait of what it means to be an American family today, a novel of love, identity and belonging that eloquently examines what it means to be both American and Muslim -- and announces Fatima Farheen Mirza as a major new literary talent.

A Place For US is a beautifully written novel that weaves together different perspectives from an Indian Muslim-American family to share their individual and collective experiences. Full of wistful memories, it was the perfect book club pick for the end of summer.
— Madison Cassidy, Account Coordinator
A Place For Us was such a wonderful read that gives you an insider’s look into the life of an Indian Muslim family living in California. It tugged at my heartstrings and made me fall in love with all of the characters, even the difficult ones.
— Caroline Sink, Intern
A Place For Us is the only book that has brought me to the verge of tears in the past few years. The characters are relatable, the story is beautiful, and there is something meaningful on every single page.
— Lauryn Vincent, Intern
I could not put this book down! A Place for Us is an emotionally-evocative and profound story of family and belonging. I was also blown away that this is Fatima Farheen Mirza’s first novel.
— Lizzie Nelson, Assistant Account Executive
I love, love, loved A Place for Us – definitely my favorite H&S Book Club pick thus far. As an Indian-American, I found that the story, characters and relationships really resonated with me. It was a deeply moving read that I would strongly recommend!

Agency Off Duty: Chelsea's Top 3 Places to Visit After COVID Ends

Chelsea Ensel_Headshot 2.jpg

Chelsea Ensel, Senior Account Executive

Since I usually take about 2-3 big trips a year, COVID has allowed me to truly assess where I want to visit as things start to open back up. My dream trip would be a train ride starting in Kiev, going to Minsk, then up through the Baltic states stopping in Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, with a final stop in Helsinki. The below three cities have been on my mind for the past few years, and they will be my go-tos when restrictions fully lift!

ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO

No less than two weeks after COVID struck NYC hard did I have a trip to Albuquerque planned. I still have intentions of going to see the petroglyphs, hike around inactive volcanos, and maybe even stop by my first ever honky-tonk. The brewery scene is supposed to be one of the best in the country, and I’ll need some top-notch tacos and Native American cuisine to soak it up with.

NAPLES, ITALY

My mother’s family came from a small town on the outskirts of Naples, and I have always wanted to visit and pay my tributes. Aside from seeing the small village of Montesarchio, a quick trip to San Marzano sul Sarno would be a must to taste fresh-from-the-soil-of-Mount-Vesuvius San Marzano tomatoes.

MINSK, BELARUS

Minsk is a soviet-era architectural lovers dream – some of the last refuges of Stalinist architecture can be found throughout the city, juxtaposed by the hip artistic crowd who fill the local coffee shops and galleries. For an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, there is the Belovezkskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO heritage site with free-roaming animals and old-growth forests.

ELIZABETH HARRISON, CEO

This product is Botox in a bottle! It’s my secret weapon, and has been a vital part of my self-care routine while practicing social distancing.

SUMMER ZIERNICKI, Account Executive

Two words – Target. Sweats. This pair in particular is not only comfy and affordable but also super cute so I can feel stylish even when stuck in the house. The sweatpants were so comfortable I may or may not have immediately ordered the matching sweatshirt upon arrival.

ANINA BOSE, Director

One of my skincare staples is Ole Henriksen’s Power Peel. This three-step “facial in a box” is my go-to when I need a thorough skincare boost. Especially during quarantine when we can’t get “professional” treatments (not that I ever really get professional facials, lol) – I love having a product like this to transform my skin and leave it glowing!

BIANCA MORRISON, Account Supervisor

H2-WHOA! Hyper-hydration is a health game changer, and I couldn’t make it through this quarantine without my favorite, new 80oz water bottle. It is the best thing I never knew I needed – I get glowing skin, better vibes and more water than the recommended 72oz per day with just one fill-up!

ALEX RODDY, Assistant Account Executive

My quarantine obsession is my Nintendo Switch – I’ve been playing Animal Crossing in my downtime and it is SO much fun. Essentially, you arrive to a desolate Island and you complete daily tasks and decorate the Island to your liking. You can catch butterflies, complete your fossil museum, go fishing (there are sharks), breed flowers, plant money trees, design your home etc. – all while keeping your residents happy!

Who? Weekly is a hilarious bi-weekly round-up of celebrity gossip focusing on the “whos”, meaning influencers, reality stars, and other D-list celebs, compared to “thems” that everyone recognizes, such as Beyoncé, Oprah, and Brad Pitt. Hosts Bobby Finger and Lindsey Weber combine their journalistic backgrounds to educate their listeners on “Everything you need to know about the celebrities you don't.”

HEIDI SMOLEVITZ, Account Supervisor

I grew up having bagels with my family every Sunday morning from Bagel Boss in Long Island. As a 20-something in Manhattan, Saturday’s quickly became bagel day and a time to recap Friday night with friends. While in quarantine, something I still always look forward to on the weekends is having a delicious bagel. The famous Bagel Boss actually just launched a ‘Bagel of the Month’ club, so I can feel right at home – even when I’m not physically there!

CAROLINE BATES, Assistant Account Executive

I absolutely loved Bill Cunningham’s memoir, Fashion Climbing! It’s pretty short and a very easy read, but is full of crazy and fun stories of his life and how he pushed his way into the fashion world, coming from an extremely catholic family in Boston. Even if you’re not into fashion, the book is an amazing look into what high society life was like in New York City in the 1940s and 50s and Cunningham has great stories about sneaking into parties and shows to experience all the glamour.

LUIS BRAGA, Account Director Lifestyle

Pressed Juicery Apple Cider Vinegar

I recently discovered the benefits of apple cider vinegar and how great it is in terms of your digestive health. Pressed Juicery teamed up with BRAGG (leading ACV brand) on a collab of juices incorporating ACV. They’re reasonably priced for pressed juices. It's my little quarantine treat in the morning for breakfast.

NIKKY DUDEK, Account Supervisor

The best way to cope with corona-panic and working out of my parents’ house has been ending a long day with a soothing face mask! This mask not only smells fantastic, but it has a cooling feel while on your skin and leaves you with a nice hydrated glow.
